Farmers’ Alliance

  • About Us

Founded in January 2021 by Dr. Nadine Burton, the Around the Bay Farmers’ Alliance (ATBFA) was established to create a support network for small farmers across the Chesapeake Bay. As part of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Small Farm Program, ATBFA provides farmers with a safe space to voice concerns, find solutions to challenges, and gain emotional, financial, and physical support. We believe in the power of unity to overcome barriers, ensuring that each farmer’s unique skills contribute to a stronger community and a sustainable future.

The Around the Bay Farmers Alliance (ATBFA) was founded by a collective of passionate farmers from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, united by a vision of sustainability and community empowerment. Our alliance represents farmers from the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas who are dedicated to preserving traditional farming methods while embracing modern techniques for sustainable agriculture. We believe that through collaboration, we can build stronger, healthier communities.

In Depth

  • Our Mission

Our mission is to advance food security in Maryland by harnessing our collective knowledge and resources. We work together to ensure that all farms in the Chesapeake Bay area stand independently as economic entities, producing nutritious, affordable food for life, health, and growth. Through collaboration, we aim to guarantee the availability and accessibility of fresh, locally grown food for all Marylanders.

  • Our Core Values

Unity: We believe that collective effort is key to overcoming challenges.

    • Sustainability: We are committed to using resources responsibly to build a sustainable future for farming and food security.

    • Food Security: We strive to provide affordable, fresh, and nutritious food to combat malnutrition, hunger, and food insecurity in Maryland.

    • Collaboration: Farmers, agricultural service providers, researchers, and stakeholders work hand in hand to advance our shared mission.

  • Our Vision

We envision a future where every farm in the Chesapeake Bay region produces optimally and sustainably, enhancing the community’s food security. By supporting each farm as an independent economic entity, we ensure that farming remains viable for generations to come. Our ultimate goal is to build a resilient food system that serves our local communities while fostering economic and environmental sustainability.
